Re: Important Information Regarding the 2013 UPUA Convention
At UPUA’s Annual Convention in Kansas City in 2012, it was resolved that the 20th Annual Convention of Urhobos in North America will be held during the U.S. Labor Day weekend (Friday, August 30th – Monday, September 2nd , 2013) and the Members of Urhobo Progress Union America (UPUA) in Urhobo Social Club of Massachusetts are hosting the convention.
Convention Theme: “Fostering the Spirit of Unity and Service among Urhobos”
Venue: At the UPUA Board of Trustees (BOT) meeting on January 25, 2013, it was resolved that the 20th UPUA Annual Convention will be held at the Boston Marriott Burlington, One Burlington Mall Road, Burlington MA 01730.
Important Facts regarding UPUA 2013 Convention in Boston/Burlington.
Boston is Massachusetts’ largest city and Burlington is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States of America. Boston/Burlington has highly desirable attractions for tourists. Boston is the scene of several key events in American history: The Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, the battle of Bunker Hill, the Siege of Boston, and the oldest Elementary Public School as well as the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library. Boston/Burlington is an important manufacturing center. The city is also an international center for education and medical science. The renowned Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are located in the adjacent City of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Boston is informally known as “Little Italy” because of its rich culture, cuisine, and beautiful buildings. Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market continue to be a “must to see” place.
Guest Room Rate & Reservation: The hotel is offering $105 as a group rate per room per night (plus applicable state and local taxes). The room rate includes breakfast for 4 people daily. Additional persons will be charged $15 per person. To get the group rate when calling to make your reservation, mention Urhobo Progress Union America, or UPUA.
All reservations must be made individually through the Hotel’s Reservation Department by calling the hotel reservation at 1 800-371-3625 or online through UPUA’s website, www.upuamerica.com. Guests’ accommodation will be available at 4:00 P.M on the day of arrival and guests are expected to checkout by 12 noon on the day of departure.
Cut-Off Date for Hotel Reservations at the Group Rate: The cut-off date for hotel reservations at the group rate is Saturday, August 17, 2013, so please call the hotel quickly to reserve your room. Please note that a credit card number will be needed at the time of your reservation. However, you will not be billed until after your stay.
Air Travel Arrangements: We strongly recommend that you book your flight to Boston Logan Airport (18 miles from the hotel) where the host will arrange transportation from the airport to the hotel from 3:00 P.M to 9:00 P.M on Friday, August 30, 2013. It is also recommended that you book your flight immediately to ensure the best deal as airfares will continually rise as we approach the busy Labor Day weekend.
Transportation to & from the Airport/Hotel: The Host will arrange transportation from Logan Airport to the hotel between 3:00 P.M. and 9:00 P.M. on Friday, August 30th. If your flight will not arrive within the above timeframe, you should call or text your arrival time to Mr. Emmanuel Onos, Chair, Local Organizing Committee (LOC), at1 978-549-3764 or take a taxi from the airport to the hotel. If you prefer other kinds of transportation, you may Google your preference on the Internet where there are a wide variety of choices including rental cars, buses, and limousines. Those planning to get to the hotel by taxi are encouraged to arrive with friends /family to take advantage of the taxi fare rate which is good for up to four people in a taxi. The host will arrange transportation from the hotel back to Logan Airport from 9:00 A.M to 2:00 P.M on Monday, September 2, 2013.
Convention Admission Tickets: On Friday, May 22, 2011, the UPUA BOT resolved that the admission to the convention will be $65.00 per person (12 years and above). The ticket price for children 3-12 years is $35 per child. Children less than 3 years are free. The convention ticket ensures access to all convention activities beginning on Friday night, such as registration, symposia, Saturday night convention reception and entertainment, cultural events, dinner/gala night, as well as a copy of the convention brochure.
Raffle Draw: Raffle tickets are $2.00 each. Several fabulous prizes will be won.
Deadline for Receipt of Payments for the Banquet Tickets, Raffle Tickets, and Brochure Ads: The first installment from ticket sales must be received before July 5th, 2013. The second installment must be received before August 2th, 2013. Checks and money orders should be made payable to UPUA and mailed to the Treasurer, Mr. Thompson Usiyan, 1975 Dain Drive, Lemon Grove, CA 91945. We will continue to sell tickets throughout the convention, but please emphasize to your members not to wait until the last minute. Tickets should be paid in advance.
Note: All members should ensure that the tickets sent to the various chapters are sold and paid for. Those who pay for convention tickets but do not attend the convention should consider their payments as charitable donations intended to help the union and the Urhobo people.

- Fun for the Family
In keeping with Article 9.2(i) of the 2004 UPUA Constitution (as amended in 2006), which provides that the annual convention shall include a program for children, the host (UPUA members of Urhobo Social club of Massachusetts), has put together a family program. Please bring the entire family to enjoy Boston/Burlington at this year’s convention.
- Broad Outline of Convention Business Activities
Thursday, August 29, 2013: Arrival of Executive Committee and BOT members; Executive and BOT meeting concurrently at 4:00 P.M. There is a Joint Executive and BOT meeting at 7:00 P.M.
Friday, August 30th, 2013: Arrival of Convention delegates from 4:00 P.M. There will be a continuation of the Joint Executive Committee and BOT meeting from 10:00 A.M to 3:00 P.M (if necessary). In addition, there is Friday night young adults’ party from 6:00 P.M to 1:00 A.M. If you are part of these important meetings, please plan your flight to arrive early to ensure punctuality.
Saturday, August 31, 2013 (8:00 A.M. – 5::00 P.M.): There will be a Symposium and a General Membership meeting. Speeches will be delivered by the President-General of Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) Worldwide, Olorogun General Patrick Azziza, as well as other dignitaries from Nigeria, Europe and North America. Each UPUA chapter President will make a presentation. There is a Saturday night convention reception and entertainment by the host. Furthermore, provision has been made for UPUA young adults and other young adults to meet and brainstorm. Saturday, August 31, 2013: (6:00 P.M. onwards): Reception/entertainment for convention delegates and guests by the host.
Sunday, September 1, 2013 (9:00 A.M. – 10: 30 A.M.): Church Service.
Sunday, September 1, 2013 (11:00 A.M – 12: 00 noon): The Election of UPUA President for the January 1, 2014 – December 31, 2015 tenure.
Sunday, September 1, 2013 (12:00 noon – 4: 00 P.M.): A tour of Boston/Burlington will be organized by the host for children, family members, convention delegates, and guests.
Sunday, September 1, 2013 (6:00 P.M. – 1:00 A.M.): Gala Night, Cultural Extravaganza and Music/Dinner/Dance, raffle draws and fund raising for UPUA’s charitable and community development projects in the U.S. and Nigeria including scholarship awards.
Monday, September 2, 2013: Departure of invited guests and convention delegates.
Note: The above program of activities is subject to change. More detailed information will be communicated to you as preparation for the convention progresses.
Convention Brochure: The brochure will be standard 8.5” x 11” size, glossy color (cover & inside) for the most part. However, black & white advertisements will be accepted. This is an excellent opportunity to advertise your business, and for individuals and chapters to send goodwill messages. Your friends and business associates can also utilize this great opportunity to reach out to a unique audience. Deadline for submission of advertisements: Friday, August 02, 2013. All advertisements must be paid for in advance before they will be published in the convention brochure.
